2 SAPS detectives shot dead in Roodepoort

Deaths of men and women in blue should be of grave concern, police commissioner General Fannie Masemola says.

Police are investigating a case of murder after two Honeydew police detectives were shot and killed while on duty in Roodepoort.

The two men – a constable and a sergeant – were found metres away from a state vehicle, national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says. “Gauteng police have mobilised resources to apprehend those responsible for this crime,” he adds.

National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola calls on community members to take a stand against police killings. He says the killing of men and women in blue cannot continue.

“In the past week, the SAPS has sadly lost five police officers in the line of duty, two in the Eastern Cape and three in Gauteng,” Mathe explains.

Meanwhile, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation’s Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit based in Secunda and the Secunda K9 Unit arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the 2022 murder of Warrant Officer Hlatshwayo.
