2 suspected CIT robbers shot dead on N12
Gauteng police are searching for two suspects who are believed to be linked to a cash-in-transit robbery in the Free State.
Two suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers were shot dead during a shootout with Gauteng police on the N12 near Westonaria in the early hours of this morning (November 7), reports Randfontein Herald.
The suspects are believed to have been linked to a cash-in-transit robbery in Virginia, Free State yesterday (November 6).
According to Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Mudau, the Gauteng SAPS Tactical Response Team (TRT) received information from their Free State counterparts early on Saturday morning about suspects being pursued in connection with the robbery.
The suspects were reportedly travelling towards Soweto when Gauteng TRT members joined the pursuit and spotted a vehicle matching the description of the one allegedly used in the robbery.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but its occupants allegedly opened fire on the officers, prompting police to return fire.
“Two suspects were shot dead while the other two managed to run away,” Mudau confirmed.
A 9mm pistol and an AK-47 rifle were recovered at the scene.
Police investigations are continuing, with efforts under way to trace the two remaining suspects.
