24 more illegal miner captives rescued in Sabie

The illegal Sabie mine rescue mission has thus far saved 65 captives as operations continue with specialised teams and boosted efforts.

The rescue mission of captives held by illegal miners in a disused mine in the Sabie plantations continues, with 24 more individuals brought to the surface this morning.

Lowvelder reports this brings the total number of rescued captives to 65.

“Already 24 captives were brought to the surface since the operation started at 06:30. The operation is running smoothly and faster,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli.

Efforts received a boost yesterday when specialised equipment and a team of rescuers arrived. However, operations were suspended after sunset, due to poor visibility.

National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola, accompanied by other senior police officials and provincial commissioner Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, monitored the rescue efforts yesterday.

Masemola revealed that many zama zamas were lured to the area with promises of employment or construction work but were forced at gunpoint into the mine.

Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu also visited the site to receive updates on the operation.

The rescue mission is ongoing.
