According to information on the Council of Geoscience’s website, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 was recorded shortly before 21:00 last night in Johannesburg.

Information published by Earthquake List said the quake occurred 9km northeast of Westonaria, Gauteng.

Mahlatse Mononela, the spokesperson for the Council of Geoscience, said that according to the South African National Seismograph Network (SANSN), the epicentre was located south of Johannesburg, in Soweto.

This is the second tremor recorded in two weeks, with the previous one taking place on January 23.

In addition, according to the SANSN, just over a month ago, a 2.5 magnitude earthquake also hit parts of Gauteng.

Earthquake information published on the Council for Geoscience’s website is obtained from waveforms recorded by the SANSN. The information provides both automated and analysed assessments of the earthquake parameters.
