3 arrested after high-speed chase and shoot-out in Turffontein

Three suspects arrested after a high-speed chase and shoot-out have been linked to robberies in Ridgeway and Mondeor.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit apprehended three suspects after a high-speed chase and shoot-out in Turffontein on Tuesday.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla says that while conducting crime prevention patrols, officers spotted a blue Hyundai Accent speeding.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver ignored their signals and fled, endangering other motorists. During the pursuit, the suspects fired shots at the officers.

“The suspects continued their reckless driving, where they collided with a maroon Renault Kwid at the intersection of Kliprivier Drive and Turf Club Road. Despite this collision, the suspects persisted in their attempt to avoid arrest.

“The pursuit finally concluded at the corner of Garden Road and Turf Club Road, where the suspects were apprehended.

“A subsequent investigation revealed that the suspects were wanted in connection with a robbery in the Ridgeway area, where they allegedly stole a cellphone from a schoolchild. Furthermore, the vehicle was identified as being sought in connection with a series of robberies in the Mondeor area, as per the Mondeor SAPS case.

“All three suspects were arrested and detained at Booysens SAPS. They are scheduled to appear in court soon. The JMPD commends the bravery and professionalism of the TRU officers involved in this successful operation.

“This incident underscores the JMPD’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents of Johannesburg,” explains Fihla.
