3 children killed, 10 injured in Meyerton crash

A collision involving two transit vehicles, a minibus taxi that transported children and a sedan, proved fatal.

The Midvaal Local Municipality confirmed this morning that three children lost their lives in a tragic crash that took place in Pierneef Boulevard in Kookrus, Meyerton, yesterday afternoon.

Two transit vehicles, a minibus taxi that transported children and a sedan were involved in the collision.

A further 10 people were injured.

According to the municipality, employees of a security company, the driver of the sedan and several children are among the injured.

The accident scene was a hive of activity yesterday when helicopters and ambulances came to collect the injured people from the scene and transported them to various hospitals.

Pierneef Boulevard was cordoned off and residents were asked to use alternative routes. The street has since been reopened to traffic.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families who have lost loved ones in this tragic event. We also wish a speedy and full recovery for all the injured,” said Mayor Peter Teixeira in a statement.

Teixeira and members of his mayoral committee, as well as councilors from the municipality, were on the scene of the crash, yesterday.

According to Midvaal, the police are investigating the case to determine exactly how the collision happened.

“Further details will be announced as soon as they are available,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.
