3 due in Kempton Park court over illegal precious metals case

Two senior police officers and a civilian are expected in court following their arrest in an alleged illicit precious metals and corruption investigation.

The SAPS has confirmed the arrest of two senior police officers and a civilian allegedly linked to the illegal dealing and unlawful possession of precious metals following an intensive investigation by the Gauteng Counter Intelligence Operations.

Kempton Express reports that, according to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the suspects were arrested after investigations into allegations of illicit precious metals transactions, corruption and related offences.

“The arrests were effected over the weekend by the team who executed a J50 warrant of arrest,” says Mathe.

Ongoing investigations

She adds that the arrests form part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to dismantle criminal networks involved in the illicit trade of precious minerals and corruption.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (May 11).

They are expected to face charges including unlawful dealing in precious metals, defeating the ends of justice, corruption and contravention of legislation regulating precious metals in South Africa.
