3 men to appear in court after woman killed in Cape Town

Three men are expected in court today over the fatal stabbing of a woman who was on her way to her grandchild’s birthday.

Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel André Traut confirmed that their investigation into Karin van Aardt’s murder has yielded new developments. Three men are expected to make their first court appearance in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court in Cape Town today.

Lowvelder reports that Traut said the 33-year-old suspect who was arrested first, failed to appear in court yesterday.

Attack during family trip

Van Aardt’s brutal death sent shockwaves through the Lowveld and South Africa. She and her husband had flown from Mbombela to Cape Town and were on their way to Vredenburg for their grandchild’s eighth birthday when a group of men attacked them in a smash-and-grab, during which she was fatally stabbed.

A memorial service will be held at NG Moedergemeente Nelspruit at 11:00 next Thursday.
