3 suspects killed in shoot-out with KZN police

Law enforcement officers recovered two AK-47 rifles, a .38 revolver and a cache of ammunition after receiving a tip-off.

Three suspects were shot and killed in a shoot-out with police in the Mbabane area in Msinga, KZN, early this morning.

According to an article published by The Witness, Umzinyathi District police spokesperson Constable Siyabonga Nkwanyana says the shoot-out unfolded during an intelligence-driven operation conducted by the Pietermaritzburg Public Order Policing unit.

“Authorities had received information regarding the possession of unlicensed firearms and proceeded to the identified location. Upon arrival, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the police officers, who then returned fire, resulting in the fatal shooting of three individuals,” says Nkwanyana.

During the operation, officers recovered two AK-47 rifles, a .38 revolver and a cache of ammunition.

In a separate incident yesterday, Glencoe K9 Unit officers, acting on crime intelligence, arrested five suspects on the R33.

The suspects were found in possession of a Ruger rifle and ammunition inside the vehicle they were travelling in.

“One of the arrested individuals has been linked to a mass murder case that took place in the KwaNqulu area within the Nquthu policing precinct in October 2023,” says Nkwanyana.

Nkwanyana adds that police investigations into both incidents are ongoing and the five suspects are expected to appear in the Msinga Magistrate’s Court soon.
