The reason behind multiple seal carcasses washing up on the beach between Bay View and Dias in Mossel Bay is unclear at this stage.

This is according to the Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (Smart). Val Marsh of Smart says there had been reports of between 50 and 60 seals washing up since the severe weather conditions of a few weeks ago.

This is an above normal number.

According to Marsh, the majority of these seals were yearlings. She says these juvenile seals are not that skilled when it comes to catching food or swimming, which could be why they make up the majority of the carcasses.

This is mere speculation though, and Marsh explains an investigation that is currently being conducted will provide the answers.
