6 dead, 11 missing after Ladysmith floods

K9 Search and Rescue tried to locate the missing people who are presumed to have been swept away by floods.

The Ladysmith community woke up in shock after heavy rainfall and flash floods caused the death of at least six people with 11 still missing. Parts of Ladysmith, including Lyell Street and King Street, were under water due to the heavy rainfall last night (December 24).

According to IPSS Search and Rescue rainfall caused flash floods in Bell’s Spruit and Kliprivier with several cars washed away.

The Shepstone Bridge roadway has been completely washed away reports the Ladysmith Gazette.

IPSS said that six bodies has since been recovered and another 11 people, including children, are still missing.

The search has been called off for the day, as the single Search and Rescue member and his K9 are exhausted and await additional resources.
IPSS Search and Rescue has deployed a four-man, two-vehicle team to work with the SAPS K9 Search and Rescue.
