The victim and his son pulled over after they thought they were stopped by the police, after which they were attacked.

The police in Vereeniging are investigating the murder of Ishmael Motswahae Leetsi (61).

Leetsi was shot and killed during  an attempted hijacking on Houtkop Road on Monday morning just after 08:00.

Leetsi together with his son were on their way from Sonlandpark when they were stopped by occupants of another vehicle that was going in  a different direction.

Leetsi’s son, who was driving says he thought he was being stopped by the police. “I slowed down because I thought we were being stopped by the police. One man from the vehicle came to my window and attempted to pull the car keys from the ignition.

“When this happened, my father who was on the passenger side tried to pull the man and he managed to loosen himself from my father’s grip. He pulled out his gun and shot at my father multiple times before fleeing.”

Leetsi died on the scene while his son had to be taken to hospital after he fainted on the scene.

Talking to Sedibeng Ster, the Leetsi family said they were hurt and deeply disturbed by the incident. Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda confirmed the incident.

“A murder and attempted murder docket has been opened for investigation.”
