7 injured in warehouse construction collapse outside King Shaka airport

Seven workers were injured, one critically, in a construction site collapse on the R102 near King Shaka Airport.

A structural collapse at a construction site on the R102 in KZN left seven workers injured yesterday afternoon.

The police and various medical rescue teams responded to the emergency at the intersection of the R102 and the King Shaka Airport link road, opposite the Shell garage.

One person was critically injured and airlifted to hospital by the Netcare 911 helicopter.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick says the call came in at about 13:45.

Ten people were initially reported injured, but only seven were, in fact, hurt.

“The collapse injured five people on the ground and a further two patients were stranded, hanging from the roof in their harnesses,” adds Meyrick.

“The stranded patients were rescued using a cherry picker and rope system and brought down to waiting paramedics.

“Both patients were transported to hospital in a serious condition, under the care of IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics.”
