AB Steyn, Dawie Groenewald rhino horn case again delayed in Mbombela
Legal proceedings in a long-running rhino horn case remain stalled as a recusal application and prosecutorial review continue to delay progress.
After more than five years, the case against Schalk Abraham ‘AB’ Steyn and Limpopo game farmer Dawie Groenewald was postponed yet again in the Nelspruit Regional Court today.
Lowvelder reports the two face charges of the illegal possession and transportation of rhino horns.
The defence previously brought a recusal application, alleging that the magistrate was biased. An attorney for one of the accused also previously filed representations with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
State seeks more time
The state requested a postponement to allow the NPA more time to review the docket. The matter was postponed to August 24, when the outcome of the recusal application is expected to be heard.
Steyn and Groenewald were arrested together on July 20, 2021, at a property in the Riverside area, where 19 rhino horns were found. They were granted bail of R50 000 each shortly thereafter.
