Absa bank receives false bomb threat

Key West Shopping Centre in Krugersdorp, Gauteng was evacuated this afternoon following a bomb scare at the Absa Bank branch.

Krugersdorp police spokesperson Constable Tshepiso Mashale said an anonymous caller allegedly tipped off the switchboard operator of a possible bomb threat at the centre, Krugersdorp Newsreported.

Staff members from the stores that were temporarily closed sat anxiously outside the mall while the building was thoroughly searched.

Mashale added police, K9 Unit and Explosive Unit were called to the scene and conducted a search. After the search, the mall was declared safe. Operations continued as normal and no injuries were reported.

Last month, a bomb threat was reported at the Alexander Forbes building in Sandton, Johannesburg.

Hundreds of employees were left standing in a cordoned-off section of West Road for almost three hours.

Police said its K9 unit searched the building, as employees remained on the street.

Both Gautrain buses and trains remained operational throughout the ordeal.
