‘Abused’ baby image on social media causes distress
Disturbing images of an abused infant, seemingly abandoned by her caretakers and eaten by ants, continue to circulate on social media.
Photos of the naked baby, revealing her brutalised face, body and injured, swollen genitals, caused such trauma, a recipient who unsuspectingly opened the attachment had to be medicated, Zululand Observer reported.
The recipient then reported the incident to authorities in terms of the legal obligation to report child abuse or suspected child abuse and prevent further distribution and legal liability.
The pictures, accompanied by an Afrikaans prayer request, stated the victim was rescued and in hospital. The whereabouts and identity of the little girl and nature and extent of injuries had not yet been established.
The badly bitten child was found on the outskirts of Chelyabinsk, a city in Russia, Mirror reported.
The passer-by who found the child said she had her umbilical cord attached. The child was taken to hospital, and is expected to make a full recovery. Police continue to try and trace the child’s parents.
Members of the legal fraternity and social workers cautioned the public from illegally circulating disturbing images via social media.
