Alex shop found selling expired baby food

Gauteng community safety officials raided a store in Alexandra that was found to be selling a variety of food goods, including baby food, that had all exceeded their sell-by dates.

Locals had been complaining about the products being sold at the Alexandra fruit and veg store, which in some cases was three years beyond its sell-by date.

According to Gauteng community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko: “We just stopped a lady inside the store going to pay for sauces that had expired.”

She said her officials found expired baby food, energy drinks and soups on the shelves that were not fit for human consumption.

The food was removed from the shelves, and loaded into a rubbish truck where they were crushed and taken away.

There was no word on what happened to the owners.

Last month, Mazibuko and her team were left in shock after raiding a butchery in Soweto and finding what they said was rotten meat being sold.

The meat was being offered to people waiting in queues outside to buy food.
