Alleged dagga dealer arrested in Mpumalanga

A man who didn’t stop his vehicle when requested to by traffic officials and a SAPS officer was arrested following a high-speed chase.

Law enforcement officials found bags of dagga with different addresses written on them stashed in a car when they arrested an alleged reckless driver.

Police arrested a 31-year-old man after finding six large bags stuffed with dagga in a car in Mjejane near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga on Wednesday at about 17:50.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli says Mpumalanga provincial traffic officials were conducting their duties at a vehicle control checkpoint when they were joined by a member of the SAPS.

They noticed a white Toyota Corolla overtaking on a barrier line.

“The officials ordered the vehicle to stop but the driver sped off. A high-speed chase ensued.

“The officers cornered the vehicle on the Coopersdal Road.

“Upon searching the vehicle, the [officers] discovered that the car was fitted with false number plates. They also found bags of dagga loaded on the back seat and in the boot of the vehicle,” says Mdhluli.

He says preliminary investigations revealed that the bags of dagga, which were marked with specific names and addresses, were destined for Gauteng.

The man was charged with reckless and negligent driving and for dealing in dagga.

He appeared in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court yesterday. At the time of publishing, the outcome of his court appearance was not known.

The dagga and the vehicle were seized for further investigation.
