Alleged gang member killed in Tongaat cash-in-transit attempted robbery
A man was shot dead and another was arrested during a cash-in-transit attempted robbery in Maidstone, Tongaat last Thursday.
It is alleged that the two men were members of a gang of 5 who opened fire on security guards busy loading money into an ATM, wounding a security guard and a driver, North Coast Courier reports.
Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said the men allegedly fired at the security guards, who then returned fire, killing one of the gang.
“Two 9mm pistols with live rounds of ammunition were found in possession of the suspects and 2 stolen vehicles were also recovered from the crime scene,” said Mhlongo.
The 46-year-old arrested man was due to appear at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
“The Durban serious organised crime unit is investigating a case of business robbery, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.”
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram said the other men escaped in a red Kia and a white VW Polo.
“A security officer based at Shoprite U Save on Gopalall Hurbans Road was shot in the leg.
“The driver of the cash-in-transit vehicle was also injured by shrapnel after the suspects opened fire on his vehicle,” said Balram.
