The police have successfully apprehended an alleged cop killer who reportedly broke free from custody near the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The suspect, identified as Denis Spencer Chipenza (35), had escaped after appearing in court alongside three co-accused: Paulio Ticha Quembo (33), Nelson Mudavahu (33), and Lawrence Simango (34).

Middelburg Observer reports they are charged with the murder of Detective Sergeant Simon Mbonani and the serious wounding of Sergeant Sthembiso Magubane.

Chipenza reportedly fled the scene wearing a red T-shirt, which was found discarded, leading police to initiate an intensive manhunt. The search focused on the area surrounding Dr Derek Bissett’s paediatric practice on OR Tambo Street. A SAPS team, along with a Hawks security officer, entered the premises after repeated alarms went off. However, after questioning nearby residents, no suspicious activity was reported.

Middelburg Observer reports that law enforcement later managed to capture Chipenza, bringing him back into custody and ending the manhunt.

Mbonani’s death

The late Mbonani, who was killed in the line of duty, was commemorated on September 1 at the annual SAPS Commemoration Day in Pretoria. The event, held at the Union Buildings, honoured police officers who died between April 2023 and March 2024. Mbonani, aged 43, had served as a detective at the Middelburg Police Station for 15 years. He was tragically killed on April 3 last year while responding to a tip-off about diesel theft at a mine near the N4. Upon arriving at the scene with Magubane, the officers were met with gunfire, leading to Mbonani’s death. The four suspects, including Chipenza, were later arrested and charged in connection with the murder.

Mbonani’s name has since been engraved on the National Memorial Wall at the Union Buildings, ensuring that his bravery and sacrifice will be remembered. The SAPS commemorated the 39 officers nationwide who lost their lives during this period, recognising their commitment to serving and protecting their communities.
