Alleged serial rapist appears in Benoni court to face 145 charges

A former Prasa security guard is accused of rape, kidnapping, fraud, pointing a firearm and several other offences.

The case against a 38-year-old man dubbed the ‘Daveyton/Thembisa serial rapist’ was again postponed in the Benoni Regional Court on Friday.

The former Prasa security guard is facing 145 charges including 44 counts of rape, 43 charges of kidnapping, 41 of pointing a firearm and 17 additional charges, including fraud, obstruction of justice, forcing someone to witness a sexual act, contravention of the Police Service Act 68 of 1995 and contravention of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.

The court was briefly adjourned at 10:00 after the judicial precinct’s generator failed to start during load-shedding.

Proceedings got underway 47 minutes later, when power was restored.

Following a brief appearance the case against the accused was postponed to September 29, waiting on instructions from the director of Public Prosecutions.
