Ambulance services to march through Durban over R5-million unpaid work

The ambulance companies said they have not been paid for services rendered during February and March.

Personnel from private ambulance services are planning to march to the offices of the Road Accident Fund (RAF) in Durban over R5-million worth of unpaid services, Northglen News reports.

The KwaZulu-Natal Private Ambulance Association (KZNPAA), which comprises of 25 emergency services companies, said the procession to RAF comes as a last resort after failing to recoup the money for their work.

“The already burdened government service relies on private services to deal with motor vehicle collisions. In saying this, however, with non-payment from the Road Accident Fund, private services are struggling to survive,” according to a statement issued by Garrith Jamieson, KZNPAA spokesperson.

“In conjunction with this procession, our members will only service their respected insured clients which could negatively impact people involved in car accidents. These injured people will need to wait for EMRS to attend to them.”

According to the statement, this relates to work done between February and March this year.

Jamieson said they met with RAF management last week where they tabled their concerns.

“A brief discussion was held and there was no specific resolution offered by the regional manager and to date no communication has been received from the RAF making any commitments,” he said.

KZNPAA will stage a peaceful procession with multiple ambulances and response vehicles from Dr Pixley Kaseme Street to the offices of the RAF on Friday to hand over a memorandum.
