ANC in the lead in Newcastle ahead of finalised election results

A total of 67 seats are available - 34 are ward candidates and 33 are 'party representative' seats.

The results from the 2021 Local Government Elections will be officially released by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the next day or so.

At this stage, officials say local votes have been fully counted.

According to provisional results, the African National Congress should take 22 seats on the Newcastle Local Council while the Inkatha Freedom Party has 18 seats at this stage.

The Economic Freedom Fighters currently has 8 seats, Team Sugar South Africa has 7 seats, and the Democratic Alliance has 5 seats.

ActionSA looks to gain 3 seats, while the African Transformation Movement, National Freedom Party, Patriotic Alliance, and Vryheidsfront Plus are in line for 1 seat apiece.

A total of 67 seats are available on the Newcastle Local Council – 34 of these are allocated according to leading ward council candidates and 33 are ‘party representative’ seats based on the proportional vote.
