ANC welcomes progress in human rights lawyer’s murder inquest

The ANC in KZN is confident in the appointment of Judge Pieter Bezuidenhout as the chair of the inquest into Griffiths Mxenge's death.

The ANC has welcomed the latest developments in the inquest into the 1981 murder of its activist and human rights lawyer Griffiths Mxenge — who was stabbed and bludgeoned to death in Umlazi, south of Durban.

In 1983, an inquest established by the apartheid government into Mxenge’s death could not identify his attackers.

However, former justice minister and international relations and co-operation minister Ronald Lamola — who was of the view that the 1983 inquest deliberately let Mxenge’s killers off the hook — in May announced a fresh inquest into the late anti-apartheid campaigner’s death.

ANC KZN secretary Bheki Mtolo, who expressed confidence that the current inquest will identify Mxenge’s killers, welcomed KZN Judge President Thoba Poyo-Dlwathi’s recent announcement that Judge Pieter Bezuidenhout would chair the inquest into Mxenge’s death.
