Anti-poaching champion killed by rhino in Graaff-Reinet

The owner of a rhino protection company was attacked by a rhino during a routine operation in an Eastern Cape reserve.

The 58-year old owner of an anti-poaching and rhino protection business was killed yesterday when he was attacked by a black rhino on the Samara Karoo Reserve south of Graaff-Reinet.

In a statement released this morning, the directors of Samara Karoo Reserve announced the death of Schoeman van Jaarsveld, the director of Milk River Security, reports the George Herald.

Van Jaarsveld was attacked by the rhino while conducting anti-poaching services on the reserve.

The Samara directors and staff, Milk River Security and the victim’s family are devastated by the lethal attack that occurred at around 10:30.

Milk River Security provides anti-poaching, security and rhino protection services to several properties in the area.

The Samara statement says Van Jaarsveld and his team have been responsible for invaluable work in protecting wildlife, especially rhinos in the region.

“He will be sadly missed and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and team.”

After the attack emergency services were summoned to the scene, where Van Jaarsveld was declared dead.

A full investigation is currently underway and Samara is working closely with the authorities.

Samara asks that the media and public respect the privacy of the family at this devastating time.

Samara Karoo Reserve is a 70 000-acre private game reserve located approximately 55 km south of Graaff-Reinet.
