Assault rifles used at Soweto tavern shooting

A total of 24 people were shot in the incident at Mdlalose’s Tavern in Orlando.

Gauteng Police Commissioner, General Elias Mawela has confirmed that the death toll related to the Nomzamo tavern shooting has risen to 15.

A total of 24 people were shot in the incident.

Mawela also said one person who had been admitted to hospital has been discharged.

“Our forensics team has lifted all the evidence from the scene and we should now move on with the next phase of the investigation.

“We urge residents who might have information that can assist to come forward, go to the Orlando Police Station with that information. We will leave no stones unturned,” said Mawela.

Men who were armed with AK47s entered Mdlalose’s Tavern on the early hours of Sunday and opened fire.

A total of 24 people were shot and 14 of them died on the scene – while one died in hospital.

Ten were rushed to hospital. Two out of the four who were critical have been confirmed dead making the death toll to be 15. The forensics team is still on the scribe scene finalising the investigation.
