The death toll now stands at 64, the City of Joburg EMS confirmed in a Facebook post.
“Firefighters continue search and recovery operations as the death toll of this morning’s fire at a five-storey building in the Johannesburg CBD rises to 64. Over 43 other people have also been injured, with the number likely to increase,” the post states.

A blaze in Johannesburg’s CBD has already claimed the lives of at least 58 people.
“The firefighters attended to the fire at a five-storey building in Johannesburg CBD on the corner of Alberts and Delver streets,” Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi told The Citizen.

“There are also 43 people who were treated for smoke inhalation and various injuries and [some] were transported to various healthcare facilities in the City of Johannesburg for further medical care.”
According to Mulaudzi, the cause of the fire will be investigated.
