Attempted murder accused, friend shot outside Durban court

A community leader says she hopes the incident will shine the spotlight on gun violence in Wentworth where two of the victims reside.

Two men from Wentworth in Durban and a bystander were shot outside the Durban Magistrate’s Court earlier today.

According to sources, one of the men, who was shot while exiting his vehicle outside the court, was due to appear in court for attempted murder, while the other was a friend of the accused.

A third person, believed to be an employee at the court, was caught in the crossfire and injured.

Sergent Zanele Khomo of Durban Central SAPS says “Two people, both aged 21, were shot outside the building. One person was injured on the left leg above the ankle, and the second was injured on their left arm.

“[A] stray bullet hit a third person inside the building, who was injured on their left leg.”

“The suspect is known to the two victims,” says Khomo.

Andreas Mathios of Marshall Security responded to the scene just after 11:00. He says the gunshot victims were treated on the scene.

Activity at court carried on as normal after the shooting scene was contained says Mathios.

Wentworth community leader, Tracey Williams, says while details of the condition of the injured men are still sketchy, residents hope that this incident would shine the spotlight on the ongoing gun violence in Wentworth.
