Baby dies after car crashes into tree in Centurion

A baby who was resuscitated numerous times was declared deceased at a Tshwane hospital.

A one-year-old girl died after a vehicle crashed into a tree and caught fire in Centurion, Tshwane, yesterday.

Emer-G-Med paramedics Melinda Naude and Sinjin Grant-Smith were at the scene at the intersection of Saxby Avenue and the R101.

Naude says a number of children were injured in the accident. Some were transported to Netcare Unitas Hospital, while others were taken to Kalafong Hospital.

They were unable to clarify if all of those injured were in the vehicle when it crashed.

According to another emergency services provider on the scene, the car hit a tree and burst into flames at around 17:15 yesterday. They said that on arrival, their medics found three critically injured children, aged one, five and 15.

The baby was resuscitated multiple times but was declared deceased at the hospital.

The five year old and 15 year old are still in hospital.

Update: Police investigate case of reckless and negligent driving

According to an article published by Pretoria Rekord later this afternoon, the police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving following the accident.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan Van Dyk says a police officer received a report about the accident yesterday at around 17:50.

“On arrival, he found four to eight ambulances busy treating people. There was a vehicle, [a] Range Rover, [which] was burnt. Inside the vehicle [were] four children with serious injuries and they were taken to Unitas Hospital [for treatment],” says van Dyk.

Van Dyk says there were seven occupants in the vehicle and they all sustained injuries.
