Baby poisoned: Johannesburg mother in hospital under police guard
A mother, who allegedly consumed poison, remains under police guard after she was found in Kempton Park following her baby’s death.
The Mayibuye community in Rabie Ridge near Midrand is in shock after the tragic death of an 11-month-old baby boy, allegedly at the hands of his own mother.
A 24-year-old woman has been arrested and is currently receiving medical treatment under police guard after allegedly poisoning her infant son on Tuesday (May 12).
Ekurhuleni District Police spokesperson Captain Nelda Sekgobela confirmed the incident.
According to information received, the woman allegedly fetched the child from a local day-care centre before poisoning him and later taking him back to the facility.
It is believed the baby began showing severe reactions shortly afterwards, prompting caregivers to rush him to a nearby healthcare centre. Sadly, the child was declared dead on arrival.
It is further alleged that the mother consumed the same poisonous substance before fleeing the area. Police investigations and follow-up leads later led officers to Bonaero Park in Kempton Park, where she was found.
She was initially taken to Bonaero Park Clinic for medical attention before being transferred to Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg.
Rabie Ridge police detectives later traced her and arranged for her transfer to Thembisa Hospital, where she remains under police guard while facing a murder charge.
“The suspect is still at Thembisa Hospital under police guard. She will appear in court as soon as she is discharged,” said Sekgobela.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death are continuing.
