Ballito construction site collapse: One survivor rescued, four dead
Four people have died after an embankment at a construction site in Zen Drive, Ballito, collapsed this morning.
One person has miraculously been discovered alive after an embankment collapsed at a construction site in Ballito this morning.
Paramedics were seen taking oxygen into a pit created by a TLB that was used to find the construction workers who were buried in soil.
The man’s condition is currently unknown. He will be taken to a hospital with a helicopter by Air Mercy Services.
The remaining four construction workers have been confirmed dead.
An embankment behind the construction site collapsed just before 9:00 this morning, burying the five men.
This morning, Theresa van den Berg from IPSS Rescue said in an interview with North Coast Courier that an emergency call was received from neighbours shortly after the collapse.
“Workers were busy working on the construction site when a wall behind it collapsed. We were on the scene very quickly but they were already under the whole lot of sand that is here.”
According to Van den Berg the embankment above the construction site was very unstable which complicated rescue efforts.
It is understood that rescue workers had to stop their efforts several times because the embankment continued to collapse.
