Beaufort West court postpones case of man accused of raping toddler

A mother reportedly left her 18-month-old girl in the care of a 21-year-old man who is now facing a charge of rape.

A 21-year-old man appeared in the Beaufort West Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with the rape rape of an 18-month-old girl in Kwa-Mandlenkosi, Beaufort West.

George Herald reports the matter has been postponed to next Thursday to allow for legal representation and a formal bail application.

According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies, it is alleged that the toddler was left in the care of the man on Monday.

Upon returning, the mother noticed her daughter appeared uncomfortable.

Further investigation revealed that the child had been violated. The incident was reported to the police.

The Beaufort West Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit is investigating the case.

The accused remains in custody and is facing a charge of rape.
