Benoni court sentences grandson who murdered his grandmother

A 27-year-old man and his two friends have been sentenced for murdering his grandmother who he accused of practising witchcraft.

The Benoni Regional Court recently sentenced Siyabonga Nkosi (27) of Etwatwa to life imprisonment for killing his grandmother, Nunu Mbela, after hearing rumours she was practising witchcraft.

Nkosi and his two friends, Thulani Zulu (23) and Bongani Mnisi (25), each received a sentence of life imprisonment.

According to Etwatwa police spokesperson Sergeant Barbara Ndaba, the three men met near Nkosi’s home and conspired to kill Mbela.

Nkosi decided to use the firearm in his possession.

After they killed Mbela, they buried her in a shallow grave inside her bedroom.

“After the murder, Nkosi went to the Etwatwa Police Station to file a false missing person’s report. A month later, the three took Mbela’s Sassa card and withdrew her money,” says Ndaba.

Nkosi’s sister made the grisly discovery in her grandmother’s room in October 2019 and reported the matter to the police.

Detective Koos Skosana thoroughly investigated the case, which led to the arrest of the three friends.
