Big fuel price drop offers short-term relief for cash-strapped motorists
A welcome drop at the pumps will bring some relief, but motorists say rising living costs mean every rand still has to stretch further.
Motorists can expect some welcome relief at the pumps from tomorrow (July 1), with fuel prices expected to decrease by around R3 per litre. While the reduction will ease pressure on household budgets, it will do little to erase the steep increases motorists have faced over the past five years, reports Polokwane Review.
In 2020, inland petrol cost around R16.02 per litre.
Today, motorists are paying between R23 and R24 per litre, depending on monthly fuel price adjustments. Even after the anticipated reduction, the cost of filling a tank will remain well above what drivers paid just five years ago.
Every litre tells a bigger story
For many households, fuel has become one of the largest monthly expenses. A family using about 60 litres of petrol a week now spends between R1 380 and R1 440, compared with roughly R960 a week in 2020. That translates into an additional R400 to R500 every week, or close to R2 000 more every month.
The impact extends far beyond private motorists. Fuel is widely regarded as one of the biggest drivers of the cost of living as higher transport costs eventually filter through to food prices, retail goods and delivery services.
Taxi operators, delivery drivers and small businesses that depend on vehicles have also had to absorb rising operating costs or pass them on to customers. In smaller towns and rural communities, where people often travel long distances to access work, schools and healthcare, higher fuel prices place even greater pressure on household finances.
Many motorists have responded by changing their daily habits. Unnecessary trips are being avoided, errands are combined into a single journey, and travel routes are planned more carefully to reduce fuel consumption.
The price at the pump isn’t the whole story
Although international oil prices and the rand-dollar exchange rate determine monthly fuel price adjustments, they are only part of the picture.
The pump price also includes government taxes and levies, transport and storage costs, as well as wholesale and retail margins. Among the largest fixed charges are the General Fuel Levy and the Road Accident Fund levy, meaning motorists do not always benefit fully when global oil prices decline.
The expected July decrease has nevertheless been welcomed by many motorists.
What readers say
David Waterson, who fills up his vehicle twice a week to travel to work and transport his children, said every rand saved would make a difference.
“As a budget-stretched family motorist, R3 off per litre will help. It means I can put an extra R60 to R80 towards groceries, stationery or clothes for my children. Every rand counts.”
Hunadi Kgwete said she had not yet decided exactly how she would use the saving but believed it would help with household expenses.
“It could go towards groceries or maybe a small treat for my five-year-old daughter.”
Others were more cautious, saying they expected the relief to be temporary.
“It is not so much of a relief because chances are we’ll pay for it again next month,” said Shalati Chauke. “I’ll simply use whatever I save towards other household expenses.”
Nompi Mahlangu shared a similar view, saying rising prices elsewhere in the economy quickly absorb any fuel savings.
For Tshego Ndlovu, however, the reduction could make family travel a little easier. “It gives us a bit more freedom to enjoy a weekend away without thinking twice about fuel costs,” she said.
Relief today, but what about tomorrow?
While the expected decrease will provide some short-term relief, it also highlights a longer-term reality.
Even after July’s reduction, South Africans will still be paying considerably more for fuel than they did in 2020, meaning the days of R16-a-litre petrol remain firmly in the rear-view mirror.
