Biker’s body still not retrieved from under Bloukrans Bridge

Police were on Monday alerted of an unattended motorcycle with a GP registration number plate and the next day, a body was spotted.

Eastern Cape police units have suspended attempts to retrieve the body of a biker from under the Bloukrans Bridge in Tsitsikamma, due to inclement weather.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu said that search and rescue teams will tomorrow resume their efforts to bring the body to roadside level.

The biker’s body was located below the Bloukrans Bridge early on Tuesday after police officers were alerted to an unattended motorbike, which is registered in Gauteng, near the bridge on Monday.

Police, using binoculars, spotted something ‘colourful’ in the bushes below, which raised suspicion.

“Attempts to abseil to the bottom of the 216m bridge were challenging, and the mission was temporarily aborted pending air support,” Naidu said in a statement.

Efforts to retrieve the body were resumed this morning, but were unable to continue due to the weather conditions.

The identity of the person is being withheld until the body has been retrieved and formally identified.

Members of the Gqeberha K9 Search and Rescue Unit, SAPS Diving Unit, Metro EMS from Gqeberha and Sarah Baartman District, as well as Storms River police, took part in the search and retrieval efforts.
