Bloemfontein learner (8) dies in freak accident

The Gr 1 learner died after his head got stuck in the window frame of a mobile toilet.

The death of a young boy at Caleb Motshabi Primary School in Bloemfontein, has shocked the community.

According to Free State Department of Education spokesperson Howard Ndaba, it is alleged that four learners were playing in the mobile toilets during break time, around 11:10, on Friday.

“One closed the door and it could not open. As the other learner was trying to climb out of the window frame, his body managed to get out, but his head got stuck in the window frame. He was removed from the toilet and taken into an empty classroom where he was certified dead three hours later, while waiting for an ambulance and police,” said Ndaba.

He added that the department has already despatched officials from the psychosocial unit to render counselling services to the learners, teachers and all affected by the incident.

“We would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased learner, the Caleb Motshabi Primary School community, and especially learners who might have witnessed this tragic incident. May they find comfort in knowing that we too share their pain and sorrow,” MEC Tate Makgoe.

The police are investigating the matter.
