Body of pastor retrieved from Schoemansdal dam

A pastor drowned while performing a baptism at Etiyeni Dam, with his body recovered the following day.

The body of an elderly pastor was retrieved from the Etiyeni Dam in Schoemansdal yesterday.

Lowvelder reports the pastor has not yet been identified, but Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed the incident.

“Yes, a pastor drowned [on Saturday] while performing a baptism, and [on Sunday] the police retrieved his body,” said Ndubane.

Search efforts continue into 2nd day

The police diving unit was called, and a search was immediately conducted in the dam without success.

The divers returned to the dam yesterday, and the pastor’s body was retrieved around midday.

Inquest opened

A Mpumalanga forensic pathologist declared the man dead and took the body away.

A post-mortem to confirm the exact cause of death will be conducted in due course.

Police have opened an inquest for investigation.
