Brawl murder accused back in Pretoria court today

A mom is mourning the passing of her young son, who was left dead after a street brawl in Gauteng at the weekend.

Gerhard van der Merwe, accused of murdering 21-year-old Celvin Seaborne, will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today.

On Monday, his bail application was denied and the case was postponed.

Van der Merwe is accused of killing Seaborne, who apparently intervened in a brawl outside a pub in Bergsig in the Moot in the early hours of Saturday.

Seaborne, who was in the company of his girlfriend, is said to have witnessed a street fight erupt and in a heroic but ultimately tragic act, he tried to defuse the situation. Instead, however, he ended up losing his life.

Despite paramedics’ prompt arrival, they were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His mother, Charlotte, attended the court proceedings on Monday.

She told Pretoria Rekord that on her way home from court on Monday, she had to stop at the morgue to identify her son’s body.

Seaborne’s funeral will take place on Friday at 13:00 at the Koinonia Christian Centre on Van der Hoff Road in Pretoria Gardens.
