Brits teenagers’ kidnapping: Police officer among those arrested

A police officer is among the suspects who allegedly kidnapped two teenagers from Brits in the North West recently.

Police said the six men are expected to appear in court on tomorrow.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said a multi-disciplinary team was tasked to investigate the kidnapping. They made two more arrests on Tuesday. Mokgwabone said the suspects included a police sergeant attached to Letlhabile Detectives.

Bataviya Mohammed (19) and a minor family member were kidnapped on the road near a primary school in Brits on 6 March.

The cousins were found on Monday evening, 25 March, in a house at New Stands, Klipgat, near Winterveldt and Mabopane.

The team also confiscated a vehicle that had been allegedly used during the commission of the crime.

“The number of arrested suspects remains at six. This after two of the initial six suspects arrested on Monday, 25 March, were cleared and released after thorough interviews.”

The provincial police commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, welcomed the latest developments, especially the arrest of a police officer.

He said this indicates that no one is above the law and that no stone will be left unturned to ensure that alleged perpetrators are brought to book. Kwena said that the tarnishing of the SAPS’ image by unethical employees will not be tolerated.
