Businessman killed by hitmen: Mamelodi crime boss, gang gets 30 years behind bars

The men, known as the ‘Bozwana Murderers’, followed their target from Sandton and shot him at least six times.

Mamelodi kingpin and taxi boss Vusi Reginald Mathibela (37), known as Vusi Khekhe, Sipho Patrick Hudla (41), Matamela Robert Mutapa (47), and Bonginkosi Paul Khumalo (43) have been sentenced to three decades behind bars in the North Gauteng High Court for killing North West businessman Wandile Bozwana.

Bozwana, the owner of Orgazma Energy Drinks, was killed on the Garsfontein offramp on the N1 highway in 2015. He was travelling with his business associate Betty Mpho Baloyi at the time.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said that on October 2, 2015, Hulda, Matupa and Khumala, the ‘Bozwana Murderers’ followed Bozwana and Baloyi from Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton.

The victims were driving in Baloyi’s yellow Renault Clio.

The Renault Clio Wandile Bozwana and Betty Mpho Baloyi were traveling in when they were shot.

At a red traffic light on the Garsfontein off-ramp, the hitmen got out of their BMW and opened fire on their target.

They fled the scene leaving both Bozwana and Baloyi shot but an injured Baloyi managed to drive the car some distance until they were met by police and paramedics.

Both victims were taken to hospital where Bozwana later passed away.

The murderers were arrested during 2015 and 2016.

“Three of the four men have been in custody since their arrest. However, Mathibela was granted R50 000 bail in December 2016, after he handed himself over at the Brooklyn police station in January 2016.

“He has been in custody since he was rearrested in 2019 after he violated his bail conditions, and his bail money was forfeited to the state,” said Mahanjana.

All four men pleaded not guilty to the charges against them; however, advocate Jennifer Cronje for the state, was able to present evidence proving the guilt of the four men beyond reasonable doubt and also that all four men had a common purpose in killing the deceased. They were convicted of murder, attempted murder and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition on June 22, 2023.

The men were also sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for attempted murder, six years for possession of a firearm and two years for possession of ammunition. The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently with the murder sentence.
