Bystander killed, cop injured during Friday morning CIT heist

Cash-in-transit in the Randfontein CBD on Friday morning leaves cop injured and bystander dead.

A bystander has been shot dead and police officer wounded during a cash-in-transit robbery at Randfontein Station Mall in the CBD on Friday morning, August 27.

National Police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili confirmed to the Herald the unfortunate incident occurred at about 11:00.

She explained a security guard was robbed at gunpoint by an unknown number of suspects when he went to load money at an ATM.

The suspects then targeted another security guard on their way out of the mall and as this was unfolding, two police officers who were coming into the mall were also shot at by the suspects”.

Colonel Muridili stated further that police managed to return fire and one of the police officers were subsequently shot and injured in the leg. He was taken to hospital for medical attention.

“The suspects went on to shoot their way out fatally wounding a bystander”.

She confirmed that the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money in two vehicles.

The police are appealing to anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stop on 086 00 10111 or send tip-offs on the MySAPS App.
