Call for investigation into alleged corrupt conduct at Johannesburg courts

ActionSA has called for an urgent investigation into alleged corruption, citing repeat offenders being released despite serious concerns.

ActionSA has written to the Magistrates Commission requesting an urgent investigation into potentially corrupt conduct at the Lenasia, Kliptown and Protea courts in Johannesburg.

Germiston City News reports this follows a disturbing pattern of repeat offenders being released with ease from these courts.

According to Dereleen James, a member of Parliament, the repeated release of offenders — some with up to 10 prior arrests — is a clear indication of a broken justice system.

She said the situation is particularly concerning amid the ongoing spate of e-hailing hijackings in surrounding areas, where apprehended suspects are being released almost immediately.

The party has engaged with the NPA and SAPS and was informed that these courts have been flagged for serious concerns.
