Carletonville SPCA intervenes in severe animal starvation case
A local animal welfare office manager denounces a tragic case of neglect where seven dogs had to be put to sleep after being left without food for a month.
Staff at the Carletonville SPCA in Gauteng stepped in this week to address one of the worst cases of animal abuse recorded in the area, reports Carletonville Herald.
According to the office manager, Wanda Kramer, they received an anonymous call at about 8:30 on July 10 about animals being left in a yard without food. Shortly thereafter, security officers from Gladiator Community Protection also called the SPCA for help.
The scene was a yard in Orpiment Street next to the Carletonville tennis courts.
Tragic discovery at Orpiment Street
As far as could be determined, the elderly owner of seven dogs, which included a Pekingese, a Chihuahua, a Boerboel, a Labrador cross, and several Africanis dogs, had passed away a month ago. Even though they stayed in the same yard, a group of young people, some of whom are allegedly drug users, never bothered to feed the animals after their owner had died.
The dogs were in such a terrible shape that they all had to be put to sleep. Several pet birds were also found dead around the premises.
“These people literally left the poor dogs to starve to death. Why did no one phone us for help in time in this case, which was clearly very serious?” Kramer wondered.
