Centurion: Hippo killed in collision with car

Tshwane metro still establishing if the hippopotamus came from a Tshwane Department of Environment and Agriculture Management area.

The Tshwane metro is investigating an incident in which a hippopotamus was hit and killed by a car in Centurion during Saturday night or Sunday morning.

The incident occurred near the Rietvlei Nature Reserve.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Sipho Stuurman said the metro was still establishing if the hippopotamus came from a Tshwane Department of Environment and Agriculture Management area.

Stuurman said there were no other reported fatalities regarding the incident.

The metro said nature conservation officials were activated to respond to the scene and they made arrangements for the hippo’s carcass to be removed from the roadside.

He said more information would be communicated on the matter when it became available.
