Citizens urged to donate essentials after devastating Western Cape storms

The Garden Route District Municipality has appealed for bedding, food and other emergency supplies to help families displaced by flooding.

The Garden Route District Municipality’s Multi-Agency Command Centre has issued an urgent appeal for donations to assist citizens affected by the recent severe weather conditions across the district, reports George Herald.

Community members, businesses and organisations who are able to assist are being encouraged to donate essential items, particularly bedding and non-perishable food supplies, to support families in need.

Items currently being requested include:

  • Plastic sheeting
  • Single-bed sponge mattresses
  • Non-perishable food items, including canned and dry-packed food
  • Blankets

The municipality said the donations will help support vulnerable residents impacted by flooding, heavy rain and storm-related damage experienced in various parts of the Garden Route in recent days.

Drop-off point

Donations can be delivered GRDM sub-office in Mission Street, next to the Railway Museum in George.

Delivery times are:

  • Monday to Thursday: 07:30 to 16:30
  • Friday: 07:30 to 13:30

The municipality has thanked the public for the support already shown to affected communities and urged residents to continue working together to assist those facing difficult circumstances following the storms.

Citizens seeking more information or wishing to coordinate donations can contact Lee-Ann Eksteen on 071 860 8342.
