Correctional services Covid-19 cases climb to 2 311

The Department of Correctional Services confirmed that their total number of Covid-19 cases stood at 2 311, on Sunday.

Departmental spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said 1 084 officials and 1 227 inmates contracted the virus thus far.

He said active cases stood at 617, while recoveries were at 1 673.

Twenty-one people within the department have died after contacting Covid-19.

The total provincial breakdown was as follows:

  • Eastern Cape: officials 350; inmates 734; recoveries 850
  • Western Cape: officials 465; inmates 452; recoveries 750
  • Gauteng: officials 173; inmates 35; recoveries 56
  • KwaZulu-Natal: officials 29; inmates 5; recoveries 10
  • Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West: officials 32; inmate 1, recovery 3
  • Northern Cape and Free State: officials 29; recoveries 6
  • Department’s head office: officials 6; recovery 1
