Couple dies in South Coast house fire
Police are investigating an inquest docket after both victims died of serious burn wounds.
A much-loved couple, Peter Hulley (61) and his wife, Monika (nee Lindau) (62), both lost their lives in a fire which broke out in their Southport home on the KZN South Coast last week Sunday.
The community is reeling after the tragic incident which saw the couple’s home, and everything inside, reduced to ashes. Both victims died of serious burn wounds and police have opened an inquest docket following their deaths.
Monika was a retired schoolteacher who taught at Izotsha Primary for many years, and Peter was a multi-skilled tradesperson (handyman and mechanic) and a talented woodworker.
Peter loved to spend time fishing, and locals have now named a particular set of rocks at Sunwich Port after him.
The popular fishing spot formerly known as ‘High Rock’ has been renamed to ‘Peter’s Rock’ by a fishing group called ‘The Fishing Boys’.
Peter was seen there most mornings with the regular fishermen.
The couple leave behind three children, Sharon, Darren and Terrence and two grandchildren, Amber and Skye.
Sharon said the couple were always did everything together.
“They loved each other so much, and we will miss them terribly,” she said.
