Couple survives devastating collision with horses on N2 outside George
A Knysna husband and wife are lucky to be alive after colliding with two horses, leaving their vehicle badly damaged and their dogs briefly trapped in the wreckage.
A Knysna couple escaped with their lives on the N2 outside George yesterday (June 16), when their vehicle struck two horses near the York Street/Pacaltsdorp turn-off, reports George Herald.
The accident happened between 19:30 and 19:45 while they were travelling home from Cape Town when, in the darkness, the horses suddenly appeared on the highway.
The vehicle collided with the animals, of which one was thrown onto the windscreen before landing in the road. The other horse was found dead in the right lane behind the vehicle.
The impact was severe, with airbags deploying and the dashboard damaged. Despite the force of the collision, the driver, his wife and their two dogs escaped serious injury, sustaining mainly shock.
“Everything in the back of the car shifted to the front on impact. We realise this was a miracle of a higher hand. We live to tell the story,” said the driver.
The dogs were briefly trapped in a small space at the back of the vehicle during the crash but were later safely removed.
Emergency services and traffic officials responded to the scene shortly afterwards.
He said more horses were seen in the area but later disappeared into the darkness.
The couple described the experience as traumatic and said they will be opening a police case.
They also raised concern about safety on this stretch of the N2, saying a lack of adequate warnings and controls poses a serious risk to motorists.
