Currie Cup game between Cheetahs and Blue Bulls cancelled
The third wave of Covid infections in South Africa has also affected the Cheetahs rugby team in the past few days and this team's Currie Cup match against the Blue Bulls, which was to take place on Wednesday night, has been cancelled.
The third wave of Covid infections in South Africa, which has forced the government to announce stricter lockdown regulations until 11 July, now also has an effect on the current Currie Cup tournament.
The Carling Currie Cup Premier Division match between the Cheetahs and Blue Bulls, scheduled for Bloemfontein on Wednesday, has been cancelled in line with Covid-19 protocols.
The decision to cancel the Bloemfontein game was prompted by positive tests in the Cheetahs team, and they have informed SA Rugby that they are not able to field a team with enough front row cover in such a short time frame, which puts player welfare at risk.
Although this setback will hurt the Cheetahs’ campaign in particular, the Blue Bulls will probably be able to catch their breath after a few difficult weeks in their camp, during which they even had to field two teams in two top leagues on the same weekend.
As determined by the competition rules, the Blue Bulls will be awarded four log points because of the cancellation and the result will be noted as 0-0.
Furthermore, due to the latest national Covid regulations announced on Sunday, the match between Western Province and the Sharks at Cape Town Stadium will now kick off at 17:00 on Wednesday, and not 19:00.
