Cyclist killed, another escapes attack on N1 in Bloemfontein

Police are searching for two suspects after a cyclist was fatally shot and another escaped during an attack on the N1 near a Bloemfontein dumping site.

Police have called on the community for assistance in apprehending two unknown males who attacked two men on the N1 near the Southpark dumping site in Bloemfontein over the weekend.

Bloemfontein Courant reports that, according to local police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, no arrests have been made since the incident on Saturday. An investigation is underway.

“Park Road police launched a manhunt for the two unknown African males wearing balaclavas on two stolen mountain bicycles, one silver and the other blue and white,” he said.

Upon arrival, officers found the body of a 46-year-old man, who was later identified, lying deceased with gunshot wounds, while the other 48-year-old man was left in shock. He managed to contact the police for assistance.

It is alleged that the deceased and the other man were riding their bicycles to work when they were approached by two unknown males walking alongside the road.

“As the deceased attempted to pass the first suspect, he was struck on the back of the head with a brick and fell from his bicycle. The second suspect then opened fire on the deceased. The 48-year-old managed to jump off his bike and fled the scene, leaving his bicycle behind,” Kareli explained.

SAPS has appealed to anyone with information regarding the incident to contact detective Sergeant Themba Dingile on 065 079 0973 or call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111. Callers can be assured that information shared with the police will be treated confidentially.
